Going on a cruise for the first time, were here to help ease those blues, and actually make it a memorable event. At least I didn’t mention walking the plank, right?

Knowing that cruising is one of the Premier chosen vacation destinations we have. You’re about to understand why, but first let’s find out what all the buzz is really about. It’s not only about hopping onto a boat and sailing to here or there. It’s not about visiting this Island or that Island. There’s just so much more to Cruising. We want to enlighten you to the tip of the Iceberg, pun totally intended!

Cruising is not only a fun experience, it’s also an experience, in our minds, that you’ll want to repeat often. In my personal experience, I have spent years floating around the world, visiting numerous exotic locations, touring even more cities in dozens of countries. Many, even more than once. Does that make me an experiences Cruiser? I think, perhaps not. Because I’ve met many of you that have not necessarily spent as much time sailing, but have experienced more ports, and thus more cities. Of course, that probably means more countries too.

This is going to be more for the “First Timer’s” in the world of cruising, however, so sit back and take notes as we learn the tips for First Time Cruisers!

🚢 Are you really going on a cruise for the first time?

Here’s (almost) Everything You Need to Know

So you’re booked and now you’re going on a cruise for the first time—or maybe you’re just thinking about it—and you’re not quite sure what to expect? You’re not alone! Cruising can feel a little mysterious and intimidating if you’ve never done it before, as your Travel Advisor, once you step onboard, you’ll wonder why you didn’t try it sooner.

Here’s your guide to going on a cruise for the first time (and maybe even more times than that)—packed with tips, answers, and all the “I wish I knew this before” information.

🧳 1. What to Pack (and What Not To) when going on a cruise for the first time

Yes, it’s a vacation—but packing for a cruise is a little different than a regular trip. If you’re flying to your adventure, consider the airlines allows about 45 pounds in your bag. But, you will need to keep in mind too, that the return trip will still require a bag weighing about 45 pounds.

✅ Must-haves:

  • Passport (even for closed-loop cruises, it’s safer)

  • Day bag for embarkation day

  • Swimsuits and flip-flops

  • Casual clothes and one or two dressier outfits

  • Power strip (without surge protector)

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Motion sickness remedies (bands, ginger, meds—just in case)

Pro tip: Pack lightly. This allows you to collect souvenirs along the way, and have room to bring them home with you.

Pro tip (2): Take a photo of your Passport or Identification, and send it to yourself in an email. If you misplace your identification, you’ll still have access to it.

🚫 Leave at home:

  • Irons, candles, and anything with an open flame (they’re banned)

  • Too many formal outfits—unless you’re on a super fancy line

🛳️ 2. What to Expect Onboard while going on a cruise for the first time

Your ship is like a floating resort, complete with restaurants, pools, theaters, shops, and spas. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Daily schedules delivered to your stateroom (and/or found on an app)

  • Unpack once—no matter how many ports you’re going to
  • Buffet and sit-down meals—most included in your fare (there are specialty restaurants that cost extra)

  • Entertainment every night: comedy, musicals, trivia, karaoke

  • Shore excursions for exploring each port (you can book them onboard or in advance)

Pro tip: Explore the ship early! There’s usually way more to discover than you expect.

🧭 3. Sea Days vs. Port Days

  • Sea Days = full chill mode. Spa time, naps (yeah, right?), poolside drinks, and all the food.

  • Port Days = adventure mode. Excursions, sightseeing, shopping, or beach time (and of course, more food).

Tip: Be prepared to get up early for port days—especially if you’re docking somewhere epic.

🍽️ 4. Dining: So Many Options

Most cruises have:

  • Main dining room (free, sit-down service)

  • Buffet (quick and easy, and just like the other—free)

  • Specialty restaurants (steakhouse, sushi, Italian—usually cost extra)

Bonus: room service is often free or just a small fee. Midnight pizza in bed? Yes, please.

Pro Tip: There’s going to be so much food, you’ll need to plan your weight loss goals afterward—just enjoy the moment!

🧾 5. What’s Included & What’s Not

✔️ Included:

  • Meals at main restaurants (Really? More food?)

  • Entertainment and shows

  • Pools, hot tubs, and most onboard activities

  • Kids’ clubs and teen areas

💳 Extra charges:

  • Alcoholic drinks, soda, and specialty coffees

  • Some Entertainment and Shows
  • Shore excursions

  • Wi-Fi

  • Gratuities (usually $14–$20/day per person)

Tip: Consider a drink package or Wi-Fi bundle if you plan to use them a lot. When considering, the basic package is for lesser cost beverages (usually $10) and the premium package is for costlier beverages (usually $15). Both packages are rated at 10 beverages per day. With Wi-Fi bundles, the lesser package only provides you to access email, and basic surfing, and the supreme bundle will allow streaming.

😅 6. Tips for Going on a Cruise for the First-Time

  • Arrive a day early. Don’t risk missing the ship due to flight delays.

  • Carry a swimsuit in your embarkation bag. Luggage might not arrive for hours.

  • Use the ship’s app. It helps with planning and finding your way (this is a free service while sailing).

  • Don’t overpack your schedule. Cruising is about balance—explore and relax. (You’ll be busy just have the time of your life)

Pro Tip: Early arrival will obviously add expense to your Journey. Your Travel Professional will be able to provide you with the best tips for going on a cruise for the first time.

Tip: While waiting for your room to become available, visit the buffet and have some food! This will be the beginning of your adventure!

🧘‍♀️ 7. Let Go & Enjoy the Ride

It’s okay to feel overwhelmed at first—because going on a cruise for the first time can be extremely intimidating, but you’ll settle in fast. The crew is incredibly helpful, fellow passengers are friendly, and there’s something really magical about watching the sunset over the ocean from your balcony (or even the top deck).

Once you cruise, you’ll get why so many people are hooked. Who knows? You might become one of those folks already planning the next one before they’re even off the ship.

Tip: If you’re unsure how to proceed with that next adventure, it’s advisable to speak with your Travel Professional. There are future cruise opportunities on board, if booked, you should still seek advice from your Travel Professional to assist in everything you may have missed.
